Mike Elias: Orioles Will 'Significantly Escalate The Payroll'

Aug 15, 2022 7:52 AM

The Baltimore Orioles have emerged as surprise challengers for an American League Wild Card berth and a payroll increase may be on the horizon.

"Our plan for this offseason has always been to significantly escalate the payroll," general manager Mike Elias said. "I think a lot of that's going to come through our own guys going into arbitration, but also we plan to explore free agency much more aggressively. We plan to maybe make some buy trades for some guys that are either on contracts or kind of in the tail-end of their arbitration."

"The success…has only cemented those plans.  I’m really looking forward to the offseason and kind of a winter meetings environment where we're buying.  I think it’s going to be a lot of fun for our group and for the organization."

The Orioles' Opening Day payroll was just $43.8 million, the lowest total for any Major League club's active roster.

Justin Verlander Triggers Conditional $25M Player Option

Aug 9, 2022 7:56 AM

Justin Verlander has triggered a conditional $25 million player option in his contract with the Houston Astros.

Verlander did so by crossing the 130-inning threshold in last Thursday's start against the Cleveland Guardians.

"I wasn't pitching to get to 130 innings," he said. "When we were doing the contract, [Astros owner] Jim [Crane] told me they wanted 130 innings for my player option. I was asking for a straight player option and they said they'd like 130 innings, and that was that. I thought that was a very fair number the way I like to pitch."

Verlander, 39, will now have the choice to return to the Astros for $25 million or to decline and test free agency. He has a 1.73 ERA this season.
